Skype and Live messenger to merge:
Skype the best known VOIP Software have merged with Microsoft live. So you can now log in to skype with a microsoft account. If you already have a skype account you can merge it with your microsoft account so as to get all the contacts to skype. But before doing so you need to update your skype software.
Moreover Windows Live messenger is going to end in some months. If you are signed in to messenger it will show a notification to upgrade to skype. The latest version of messenger will automatically upgrade to skype but older versions will require a manual update.
This step is taken by Microsoft as it has bought Skype. They say in order to provide best services they need to reduce similar services by merging them.
